Two (2) "at-large" seats for Dallas Councy Schools Board of Trustees are on the ballot in Dallas County, and voters should select two (2) candidates -- "Vote for 2." DGLA PAC has endorsed TWO of the candidates running for these AT-LARGE Dallas County Schools board seats:
Larry Duncan In his first six-year term on the Dallas County Schools Board of Trustees, Larry has worked to transform a dysfunctional “good-old-boy” organization into the leading example of good government that it is today. Larry currently serves as the board’s President, and has consistently innovated and organized not only the DCS school bus drivers and their buses, but also the other wide-ranging services (from IT services to teacher continuing education to regional disaster relief) that DCS provides to the 14 school districts within Dallas County. He has spearheaded one of the only moves in the country toward environmentally-sound retrofits for all 1700 DCS buses that will run on recycled vegetable oil provided by local restaurants (and, when complete, will save DCS $400,000 per year), as well as new seatbelts on many school buses more than a year ahead of a Texas law mandating them. Larry has a proven record of leadership not only at DCS but also as a past 4-term Dallas City Councilmember (where he served District 4 after fighting for the current 14-1 single-member district structure) and past president of the Dallas Homeowners League. His history with DGLA began in the 1980s (known then as “DGA”), when he and DHL worked with DGLA on tough issues, such as zoning and permitting for the Resource Center of Dallas. His advocacy for LGBT equality and issues spans decades, including fighting for and securing AIDS funding from the city in 1983 as the epidemic was beginning, and backing Bill Nelson as the first openly gay candidate for Dallas City Council. Larry will be a vocal advocate at DCS for an LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination EEO policy and LGBT diversity training for all employees.
Cassandra Gandara While a young newcomer to politics, Cassandra is a veteran of smart creative leadership and is no stranger to standing up for the fundamental rights of all Americans. A plaintiffs’ attorney at a local Dallas law firm, Cassandra is a Dallas native and grew up riding DCS school buses before earning her undergraduate degree cum laude in business administration and MIS from UT-Dallas, where she founded and led the Pancho Villa LULAC Council. While at the University of Houston Law Center, Cassandra was invited to serve as an editor of the Houston Business and Tax Law Journal, and has been published in topics relating to discrimination in the workplace. As “a proud lesbian,” Cassandra was a member of Outlaw, the LGBT law student organization at UofH, and recalls being advised along with her fellow Outlaw members by invited speakers to withhold mention of this membership on their résumés for fear of being turned down for consideration at law firms even before an interview, though she rejected that advice, not wanting to work for any law firm that would deny her employment simply because she is gay. At DCS, Cassandra will be a zealous advocate for employees, staff, and students, as well as for an LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination EEO policy and LGBT diversity training for all employees.
